SUTTEr'S MILL
Dan Fogelberg

Key: originally E, here G (capo 4th fret)

[G]In the [Gm]spring[F] of forty- [G]seven
So the [Gm]story[F] it is [G]told
Old John [Gm]Sutter[F] went to the Mill [G]site [Gm]
Found a [Cm7]piece[C7] of shinin' [G]gold.

Well, he [Gm]took it[F] to the [G]city
Where the [Gm]word[F] like wildfire [G]spread
Old John [Gm]Sutter[F] soon came to [G]wishin' [Gm]
Be'd left that [Cm7]stone[C7] in the river [Gm]bed.

Oh, they [F]came like herds of [G]locusts
Every [F]wo-[G]man, child and [Gm]man
In their [F]lumberin' connes- [G]togas [Gm]
They left their [Cm7]track[C7] upon the [Gm]land.

REFrAiN:
Some would [F]fail and some would [G]prosper
Some would [F]die[G] and some would [Gm]kill
Some would [F]beg the Lord for their de-[G]liverance [Gm]
Some would [Cm7]curse[C7] John Sutter's [G]Mill.

Well, they [Gm]came[F] from New York [G]City
And they [Gm]came[F] from Ala-[G]bam'
With their [Gm]dream[F] of findin' for-[G]tune [Gm]
In this [Cm7]wild[C7] unsettled [G]land.

Well, some fell [Gm]prey[F] to hostile [G]arrows
As they [Gm]tried[F] to cross the [G]land
And some were [Gm]lost[F] in the Rocky [G]Mountains [Gm]
With their [Cm7]hands[C7] froze to the [Gm]reins.

REFrAiN

Some pushed [Gm]on[F] to Cali-[G]fornia
Others [Gm]stopped[F] to take their [G]rest
And by the [Gm]spring[F] of eighteen-[G]sixty [Gm]
They had [Cm7]opened[C7] up the [G]west.

And then the [Gm]railroad[F] came be-[G]hind them
And the [Gm]land[F] was plowed and [G]tame
When old John [Gm]Sutter[F] went to meet his [G]Maker [Gm]
With not one [Cm7]penny[C7] to his [Gm]name.

REFrAiN

Some would [Cm7]curse[C7] John Sutter's [G]Mill [Gm]
Some men's [Cm7]thirsts[C7] are never [G]filled.
